COP3: Amber Cragg

Amber Cragg (Formally Amber Rogers. She just married her wife! So congratulations to her!) is a comic artist and story board revisionist for Cartoon Network. She's been posting autobiographical comics to her social media and I've really been enjoying them. I think I enjoy them because they're so genuine and vary in drawing quality and length depending on her storyboarding deadlines. (Which is very relatable.)

Her comics have no set structure but I feel it works to her advantage.

Her and her wife are both artists and a lot of her comics include her. I really love comics like this, where LGBT draw and talk about them and their partners interactions.

From Amber Cragg I feel I can take the idea of including small and silly interactions to make my comics more appealing and charming.

COP3: Marie Jacotey

Excerpt from Marie Jacotey’s comic in ลก! #22 ‘Fashion’.

I saw this whilst looking around for more inspiration, it reminds me of the "plates" that Alison Bechdel drew at the start of her comic making. I feel I'm too deep in structured comics to go completely for the "captioned full illustration" approach but I do really like it, and outside of this project it's probably what I would go for.

I'm really bad with fonts, so to try be more natural I've made my own font with my handwriting using this website!

COP3: Media

Alison Bechdel's comics were created with traditional pen and ink originally, although currently she's expressed that she finds herself working digitally more often than not nowadays.

A lot of comic makers currently use digital, for practicality , so I think it wouldn't be strange to use digital myself.

Because the comic will be black and white, I don't see many pros in doing it traditionally. I've seen beautiful and amazing traditional media comics but my essay focuses on social issues within the comics and although media is looked at, I feel delving into specific media would take up a lot of unnecessary time. I don't think this is a project which is geared towards experimenting with media. I will use my other extended practice projects for this.

COP3: STILL STRUGGLING

I'm still struggling with drawing myself, with drawing other people I know it's gotten slightly better, but drawing myself is very hard, very vulnerable feeling. It's definitely linked to self conscious and anxiety, I wonder how the artists I look at feel about drawing themselves? Do they find it easy, have they always found it easy?

COP3: DIVA Magazine

Picked up DIVA magazine on my trip to London! It's a magazine for LGBT women. I've never picked it up before.

  • Definitely for an older audience, middle class, professional
  • Is probably very different to the newspapers Alison Bechdel would have printed in, who would have been radical, political etc
  • I did wonder about contacting them about putting strips in here BUT in the end I think they're very different from the work I'm going to produce. My work is that of a young persons, and their audience feels older.
  • Did see a good article that could possibly go into my dissertation though! Forbbiden Lives!
